Wow – what a crappy start to 2007 for me and about 100 other people…. wait – actually more. It seems that our “free” hosting service we had been offering has been so abused that our service provider is forcing us to shut down. It’s not just our clients though. Allen Says (warrior forum) used to offer free hosting and he has a similar problem. I’ve talked to a few other folks who offered it and all say the same thing….
” NEVER AGAIN”….
I’ll have to agree with that – I’ve been doing it for about a year and support issues sucked up a couple hours a day – and not even all the website monthly members were using it (maybe 5 percent).
When 5 percent of your users are causing 30 percent of your time to be sucked away there is a problem. Anyway folks – just a tip for those of you who want to offer something like free hosting. It’s just not worth it…. and unless you keep a full time admin on it who is going through each site on a monthly basis you will get burned.
I’m looking into some options for the future though – ways to help you host your sites in an economical way…that doesn’t take a tech wizard to implement.
